No. 8 Emory Tops No. 23 Tartans in Final Regular Season Game

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The 23rd-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team traveled to 8th-ranked Emory University to close out the regular season on Saturday, November 9. The Eagles (14-3-1, 6-1) defended their home turf with a 3-0 win, moving the Tartans record to 9-4-2 on the year and 3-3-1 in the University Athletic Association.

The Tartans had two early chances in the game when senior Alex Venegas (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) had a shot saved in the fourth minute and senior Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley) had a shot hit the post in the 17th minute.

A shot by Emory's Clare Mullins was saved by senior keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) in the 19th minute before the Eagles earned a corner kick shortly after.

That corner kick was costly for the Tartans as Charlotte Butker took a short corner to Veronica Romero who crossed the ball into the box for Lauren Gorodetsky who headed the shot past Albi for the one-goal advantage in the 20th minute.

A shot by sophomore Allison McGugan (Chicago, Ill./Marist) was saved by Emory keeper Liz Arnold in the 38th minute before the Tartans had luck on their side in the 40th minute. Albi made a save on a shot by Jennifer Grant but was unable to corral it as Grant put another shot on frame that the defense stopped. A third shot hit the crossbar as the Tartans staved off another goal by the Eagles and entered the break down 1-0 after Albi made her fourth save of the game in the final minute.

Emory added to their scoreline in the 65th minute when Grant got one by Albi after a long free kick and ensuing pass into the box.

The final tally of the game for the Eagles came in the 85th minute when Emily Feldman scored on a rebound.

The Tartans, who have been ranked nationally all year and held the top spot in the Great Lakes Region until last week will have to wait to see if they'll be playing in the NCAA tournament for just the second time in school history. The NCAA selection show will take place Monday, November 11 at 1:30 p.m.
