Smith Pulls In UAA Athlete of the Week Award

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Samantha Smith (Seattle, Wash./International Community School) was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Soccer Defense Athlete of the Week following her contributions to the team's 3-0 week.

Smith, a center back for the Tartans, was instrumental in the team recording three more shutouts for the season, as they defeated Penn State Behrend 3-0, Case Western Reserve University 1-0 and the University of Rochester 5-0. The Tartans defense allowed just 12 shot attempts in three games with only seven attempts on goal.

In the Tartans' win against Rochester, Smith recorded her first assist of the season on the team's fifth goal when she served a ball toward the top of the 18-yard box for freshman Alyssa Brandt (Campton Hills, Ill./St. Charles North), who settled the pass and put a shot past the keeper.

The three wins during the week gave the Tartans 14 for the year which tied the school record for wins in a season set in 2012. Carnegie Mellon currently sits at the top of the UAA standings with one game to play in the regular season, as Emory University visits Pittsburgh on Saturday, November 8 at 2:30 p.m.
