No. 19 Tartans Win Second Straight OT Game

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The 19th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team won its second straight overtime game when it defeated Emory University, 2-1, on the road Sunday, October 16. The Tartans are now 9-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

Sophomore Emily Tolmer (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) scored the game winner with one minute and 58 seconds to play in the first overtime. Freshman Sydney Webber (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) fired a corner kick that was redirected in front of the net by sophomore Katja Brackelmanns-Puig (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) and finished by Tolmer for her second goal of the season.

Freshman Mia Keyser (Anchorage, Alaska/West Anchorage), who made four saves for the game, stopped two shots in the first minute of overtime keeping the Tartans alive. The overtime win against Emory is the second in as many years, as the Tartans defeated the Eagles in the final seconds of the second overtime a year ago in Pittsburgh.

Junior Sienna Stritter (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo School) started the scoring when she lofted a shot to the right corner over the outstretched hands of Emory keeper Danielle Staffin from about 28 yards out in the 22nd minute. Stritter picked up a loose ball near the left sideline, took a few dribbles forward and fired the shot with a defender on her heel.

The Eagles (8-5, 2-2) equalized in the 38th minute when Shivani Beall beat Keyser to the ball and scored into the empty net.

Despite putting six shots on goal in the second half, the Tartans needed extra time to get the win.

The Tartans take a break from UAA action with a match at Nazareth College on Saturday, October 22 at 3:30 p.m. The Golden Flyers are currently 10-2-2 on the year and hold a 5-1 record in Empire 8 competition.
