Botz Named ECAC Defensive Player and Rookie of the Year

(DANBURY, Conn.) – Carnegie Mellon University freshman Carolyn Botz (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) was honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) as the ECAC Division III Women's Soccer Defensive Player and Rookie of the Year. The award for Botz comes after the freshman was named to the All-University Athletic Association (UAA) First Team.

Botz started all 20 games in goal for the Tartans this season and finished the year with three freshman records. After compiling a record of 15-3-2, Botz earned the most wins by a freshman. She also recorded 11 shutouts and a goals against average of 0.46 in 1,762 minutes played to take freshman honors in both categories. The first-year goalkeeper also contributed to two shared shutouts, as the team tied the school record for shutouts in a season with 13.

A season highlight for Botz included shutting out #2 Washington University on October 15 in her hometown after making two saves in the 90-minute game. Botz also earned three ECAC Rookie of the Week honors throughout the season.

"Carolyn stepped in as a freshman and made an immediate impact on her team," said head coach Yon Struble. "The confidence the team had in her allowed them to play more freely and as a result we won more games. I'm looking forward to watching her continue to develop her game over the next three years."
