#7 Tartans Advance in NCAA Tournament, Top #10 Calvin, 2-0

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team advanced to the sectional semifinal round of the 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship with a 2-0 victory at home against 10th-ranked Calvin University. The Tartans are now 14-2-2 for the season while Calvin closes its year at 18-1-1.

Inside The Box Score

  • Junior Cecelia Dieterich opened the scoring with a header in the 13th minute following the Tartans second corner kick of the half.
  • Freshman Helena Locatelli served the corner kick to the six-yard box where Calvin's freshman keeper Kalex Dodge punched it in the air but Dieterich was there to head the ball over Dodge and the defense for the score.
  • Two minutes later Dieterich had a shot saved by Dodge and the Tartans carried a 6-0 edge in corner kicks for the half.
  • Eight minutes into the second half, seniors Helena Spencer and Alex Adams connected for a goal by Adams at the near post.
  • The Knights made the home crowd nervous in the 57th minute when the ball was headed around the box after a corner kick but the Tartans were able to momentarily clear it before Rory Pruis fired a shot from straight on outside the 18-yard box just over the bar.
  • Senior Olivia Brand made her only save of the game in the 68th minute when Emma Thompson put a shot on frame through traffic but was easily stopped by Brand who earned her fourth shutout of the season and team's 11th.

  • The Tartans have hosted the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament six times and have a home record of 13-1-2.
  • The Tartans are now 1-1 against Calvin, after falling to the Knights in 2015 in the sectional semifinal by a 1-0 score.
  • The Tartans advance to the sectional semifinal for the seventh time in nine appearances in the NCAA tournament.
