Tartans Set Season-Bests at Youngstown Invitational

(YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team participated in the Youngstown State University Invitational on Friday, January 24 for its second meet of the season. The women recorded nine season-best times with four career-best marks.

In the field events, freshman Rebecca Fortner (Navarre, Ohio/Fairless) cleared a season-best 1.60m in the high jump to finish 11th while a pair of freshman competed in the triple jump. Sommer Farber (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) lept to a season-best 9.57m for 18th place while Emily Swanson (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane Regional) jumped 8.86m for 24th place.

In the shot put, senior Samantha Oleson (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) tossed it a career-best 10.80m to finish 31st amoung Divison I, II, and III athletes.

Senior Jacquie Guevel (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.28, a season best, while she ran the 60-meter dash in 8.28 seconds for 25th place. Later in the meet, Guevel ran a season-best time of 28.01 in the 200-meter dash.

Sophomore Rekha Schnepf (McLean, Va./Thomas Jefferson HS for Sci & Tech) was 29th in the mile, finishing in 5:33.88 while senior Sara Kelly (Madison, Wis./West) was 32nd in 5:35.65. Both women recorded a career-best time.

Sophomore Alexandra Lewis (Milford, N.J./The Taft School) was 32nd in the 400-meter run in 1:02.77 while sophomore Haley Bryant (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) ran a career-best time of 2:27.92 in the 800-meter run for 34th place. Lewis also ran the 200-meter dash and did so in a season-best time of 28.04.

Senior Catherine Paquette (Bethel, Ohio/Archbishop McNicholas) ran the 3,000-meter run in 11:04.38 for 21st place while freshman Emily Joyce (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) finished 35th in a season-best time of 11:22.13. Junior Hailey Brown (Wellsville, N.Y./Wellsville) finished the distance event in 11:30.60.

The Tartans will be back in action again on Saturday, February 1 when the team travels to Case Western Reserve University for the Sixth Annual Battle of the Obelisk.
