Tartans Win Season Opener Over Case Western Reserve

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team opened the year with a decision win over Case Western Reserve University 178-108, at home on Saturday, October 26.

The 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Evan Li (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista), junior Cole Um (Federal Way, Wash./Bellarmine Prep), freshman Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) and senior Eddie Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) won in 1:35.99 to begin the meet before junior Andrew Yee (Danville, Calif. / Monte Vista) was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:52.06.

Li jumped back in the pool for the 200-yard freestyle and finished first in 1:44.27 with sophomore Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) taking second in 1:45.10.

Sophomore Alex Dintino (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) led a sweep of the 100-yard backstroke in 53.82 as junior Anton Razanav (San Diego, Calif./Westview) was second in 54.25 and Mehta third in 54.68.

Another sweep for the Tartans came in the 200-yard butterfly, as junior David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) won in 1:55.43. A pair of freshman were right behind him with Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) taking second in 1:57.87 and Mark Smith (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) taking third in 1:59.25. Sears followed the sweep with a victory in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.51 and then returned to the pool after the break to take second in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.77.

Li won for the second time, taking first in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:56.86. Sophomore Jay Jin (Canton, Mich./Canton) was second in the event in 1:59.22 with Razanav taking third in 1:59.69. Junior Roy Sung (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) followed the Tartan win with a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:12.29 as Um was just behind him in second in 2:12.56.

Yee finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.42 before Walsh led the Tartan charge in the 100-yard butterfly with a first-placing finish in 52.27. Dintino was second in 52.33 and senior Terrence Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon) third in 52.80.

To close the meet, the Tartans went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard IM with Jin leading in 1:59.55, Campbell taking second in 1:59.66 and sophomore Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) finishing third in 1:59.70.

Sophomore Ioannis Michailidis (Athens, Greece/Hellenic American) finished second on the 1-meter board with 121.27 points and second on the 3-meter board with 139.80 points.

The Tartans will be home again on Saturday, November 2 against Clarion University at 11:00 a.m.
