Two Provisionally Qualify for NCAA Championships at Kenyon

(GAMBIER, OHIO) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming team completed the Total Performance Invitational at Kenyon College on Saturday, December 7 with a sixth-place finish amongst schools like the University of Pennsylvania, Davidson College, Johns Hopkins University, Grove City College, and DePauw University.

Junior Anton Razanav (San Diego, Calif./Westview) placed second in the consolation final of the 200-yard backstroke with a season-best time and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:52.62 while freshman Jay Jin (Canton, Mich./Canton) was seventh in the same heat with a season-best time of 1:56.29.

Sophomore Philip Farr (Campbell, Calif./Bellarmine College) was the second Tartan on the day to record an NCAA provisional time when he finished the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:06.17 during the consolation final. In the bonus final, junior Roy Sung (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) finished fifth with a season-best time of 2:09.81, as freshman Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) and sophomore Peter Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) qualified for the bonus final with best times of 2:11.18 and 2:10.36.

Six men qualified for the evening swim of the 100-yard butterfly as sophomore Alex Dintino (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) swam a season-best time of 51.28 during the preliminaries to reach the consolation final. Freshman Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) finished behind Dintino in the final with a season-best time of 51.85. Freshman Evan Li (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) won the bonus final and now holds the team's top time of 50.75 while freshman Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), junior David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and senior Terrence Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon) record best times of 51.65, 51.82 and 51.65 for the day.

Junior Andrew Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) and Sophomore Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) both recorded best times in the 500-yard freestyle for the day when they qualified for the finals round with preliminary times of 4:41.10 and 4:42.75, respectively.

Senior Eddie Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) swam to a season-best time of 45.99 in the championship final of the 100-yard freestyle while Razanav recorded a career-best time of 1:55.19 during the preliminaries of the 200-yard IM which placed him in the consolation final where he finished fifth. Campbell won the bonus final of the 200-yard IM with a career-best time of 1:55.43 while Sung made the bonus final by swimming a career-best 1:56.50 in the preliminaries.

The 200-yard medley relay team of junior Josh Lucheon (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic), Farr, Mehta and Sears were seventh in a season-best time of 1:32.87 while the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Li, sophomore Lucas Bruder (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette), Wong and Sears finished 11th with a best time of 3:08.94.

The team will be back in action after the holiday break when they travel to Westminster College to take on SUNY Geneseo and the Titans at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18.
