Gates Named to Capital One Academic All-America Team

Carnegie Mellon University junior Evan Gates (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) reeled in another award as he was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Men's Track and Cross Country Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Carnegie Mellon University had two athletes named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team for men's cross country and track and field for the 2011-12 season; senior Ryan Kissell (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and sophomore Evan Gates (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson). CoSIDA recognizes outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments by honoring deserving athletes with All-Academic recognition with the official sponsor of Capital One.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team had two runners selected to the All-Academic team by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) for the third consecutive season while the team earned honors once again. Sophomore Evan Gates (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) was honored for a second time as sophomore Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif.) makes his first appearance.

Junior runner Evan Gates (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) led the Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the 2011 Mideast Regional on Saturday, November 12, at DeSales University in Center Valley, Pa. Gates placed sixth overall and punched his ticket to the 2011 Division III NCAA Championships to be held Saturday, November 19, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Junior Evan Gates (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) led the Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Saturday, October 29. The University of Chicago served as the host at Montrose Harbor where Washington University in St. Louis won the event.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team competed at the Penn State National Friday, October 14. The Tartans, the lone Division III school, placed 14th out of 22 teams. The host Lions won the event followed by Division II Grand Valley State and Duquesne to round out the top three spots.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team traveled to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, for the Dickinson College Long-Short Invitational on Saturday, September 24. The Tartans finished fifth in the long race (8k) as John Hopkins won the race and third in the short race (4k) as Dickinson won.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team had five runners finish in the top 10 of the Mack Cooper Invitational at Cooper's Lake Campground on its way to winning the race amongst Division II schools. The race was hosted by Slippery Rock University who finished three points behind the Tartans in second place.
