ITA Honors Men’s Tennis as All-Academic Team; 12 Named Scholar Athletes

The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team was honored for the sixth straight season and 13th time in the last 14 years by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as an ITA All-Academic Team. In addition, 12 players were named ITA Scholar Athletes.

Carnegie Mellon University men’s tennis junior Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) has been selected to the Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Alla garnered second team accolades for the second straight year becoming the second Tartan men’s tennis player and first since Boris Sofman in 2004 and 2005 to earn back-to-back honors.

Junior Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) competed at the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Singles Championship on Friday, May 22 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. Alla advanced to the quarterfinals on Friday after winning two straight set matches Thursday afternoon.

Senior Christian Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) and junior Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) both earned All-America honors for their play.

CoSIDA recognizes outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments by honoring deserving athletes with All-Academic recognition with the official sponsor of Capital One.

When the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Committee selected individuals and doubles teams to compete in the 2015 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships, Carnegie Mellon University found three of its athletes on the list. The senior pair of Will Duncan (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) and Christian Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) were selected to team up in doubles play while Heaney-Secord along with junior Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) will play in the singles competition.

The Bears won 7-2 after all six singles matches were played to three sets.

The win improves the Tartans overall record to 13-7 while Carnegie Mellon snaps Mary Washington's 11-match win streak, as the Eagles move to 18-4.
