Team and Five Individuals Honored by CSCAA with Academic Honor

The Carnegie Mellon University women’s swimming and diving team was honored by the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for its academic success for the 2011-2012 school year. The 27 member team earned a 3.58 GPA for the spring semester and a 3.36 for the fall.

Carnegie Mellon University junior Breanna Stillo (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Women’s At-Large First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for the 2011-2012 season. CoSIDA recognizes outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments by honoring deserving athletes with All-Academic recognition.

Q & A with Rising Senior Sarah Menio

Rising senior Sarah Menio is a two sport athlete in women's swimming and diving and outdoor track and field and is a six-time letter winner for the Tartans. This past April, Menio placed fifth at the UAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a career-best distance of 34.02 meters in the discus. Menio is a chemistry major in the MS/ BS program with a minor in business administration. The MS/BS program allows her to graduate with both her masters and bachelors of chemistry in a little over four years. She is also a member of the Science and Humanities Scholars program which is an interdisciplinary program which allows students to explore majors in both H&SS and MCS. The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team finished third at the University Athletic Association Championships which ended Saturday night after three days of competition. The women tallied 1,125 points and were just behind University of Chicago with 1,288 points while Emory University won the meet with 2,112 points.

Junior Breanna Stillo (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) led the Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team during the second day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, winning the 100-yard breaststroke as the Tartans are currently in third place with one day left to compete. Stillo also broke the school record that was set earlier in the day by sophomore Tatiana Duchak (Centreville, Va./Mercersburg Academy).

Hannah Gonzalez is from Bridgewater, N.J., and is a senior on the women's swimming and diving team and competes in the butterfly events and individual medley events. Two years ago, she helped set a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay at the University Athletic Association championships. The Carnegie Mellon University women’s swimming team defeated three opponents at the Carnegie Mellon University Quad Meet on Saturday in Pittsburgh. The Tartans defeated Washington & Lee University 163-94, the University of Rochester 149-108, and completed the sweep with a 168-84 victory over Allegheny College.
